Kindergarten Newsletter
October 2021
Mrs. Fiscus
Dear Kindergarten families,
October 1st marks the 22nd day of school, and we've come so far already!! It's hard to believe, but the children are already putting three-letter words together and beginning to write sentences! They are doing a fantastic job, as well!! Let's take a look at what October looks like in our class.
Language
arts:
As
you are well aware, the Bob Jones University Press curriculum that we use moves
at a fast pace. We have learned the following letters by sight and sound
so far: I, T, S, N, H, W. We have also learned these sight words: I, the, is, it, in, here, a, what, she, here. I love hearing the
children reading their new books. Thank you for your efforts at home as
we work together in developing strong literacy skills for the children.
The reading books should be returned each day until I write
"finished" on the back log. Make sure you practice the
"Words at Work" page located at the back of each reader. Some
children find that it helps to point to the words as they read. I encourage
you to review all alphabet letters and sight words on a regular basis as we
grow in the reading process.
Handwriting:
The
children love learning to write with their personal slates, personal white
boards, and fun things like shaving cream on their desks. They enjoy
techniques like Sky Writing, salt trays, and using Wiki Stix as
well. We use the workbooks from Handwriting Without Tears for their paper
pencil application. Developing fine motor skills is very important at this
age, so we are doing various activities to strengthen their hands. I encourage you to help your child
develop a healthy pencil grip. Our goal is the tri-pod grip. Working on
skills such as zippering, snapping, buttoning, shoe tying, etc. will also help
their fine motor development.
Math: We have learned the concepts of zero through five, as well as "greater than" and "less than", and continue to work through our curriculum with diligence. We look forward to counting and learning concepts up to 10 this month
Bible:
We
have enjoyed learning about the creation and Noah. We are beginning the
life of Abraham. Thank you for working so hard on the Bible verses.
Our new verse is:
James 2:23 b,d “Abraham believed God, and he was called a
friend of God.”
Emotional intelligence:
I use this term to describe the area of a child's growth that
includes their skills related to behavior, regulating emotions, understanding
self-control and how treat others. We use a "token economy" system in
which the children earn tickets for their good choices, and it is a delight to
watch them evaluate their ticket banks and make decisions on how they want to
"spend" their tickets in the class store. They are learning money
management through this process as well! I also use a "warm fuzzy"
jar for the class as a whole, and when the jar gets filled we will have a
special class party.
We are excited to be going to Milburn Orchards on October
19th from 9:30 am -11:30 pm. We are meeting at 9:15 am. Thank you for your willingness drive your child
and attend. If you haven't sent in $7.00 for your fee, or any additional
tickets, please do so.
We DO have school on October 8th for a 12:30 dismissal, and NO SCHOOL on October 11th. We are working on a wonderful song for Grandparent's Day on October 8th. Information about dismissal on Grandparent's Day is forthcoming.
Pretzel Day begins 10/6
Scholastic Book orders DUE 10/8
Pizza Day begins 10/15
Picture day is 10/20
Please feel free to contact me anytime. I'm honored to teach
your child, and as I look back on my years of teaching I must say that my
greatest blessing is being able to say the my "children" are
"walking in the truth". (3 John 4)
For His Glory, Mrs. Fiscus
